On The Radar 17/04/12

Tuesday's weekly selection of new tracks comprising this week's 'Staff Picks' from the Gigseen TV office ... New music featured from Coves, Unicorn Kid, Kyla La Grange, and Sea Oleena.

Coves - Let The Sun Go (selected by Grim) - Newish video for Leamington's Coves - Let The Sun Go. Coves are beginning to get the recognition which they definitely deserve, I saw them supporting Hooray For Earth last month and was pretty much blown away. Further tracks are streamable on Bandcamp and SoundCloud, and the plan it seems is for an official release coming up in the near future.

Unicorn Kid - Pure Space (selected by Kate) - Oliver Sabin has been making music under the moniker, Unicorn Kid, since he emerged onto the scene at 15. Since then, he's been making waves in the internet world with his catchy blend of Chiptune - synthesised electronic music often produced with the sound chips of vintage computers and video game consoles. Mix those synthesised melodies with some banging beats and you're onto a winner.

Meanwhile, Unicorn Kid has been creating some real club anthems like Pure Space, which is his first release of 2012. The track is a 4 minute, entirely instrumental tune and instantly likeable. He's also recently confirmed that his debut album will be released later this year via Liverpool's 3beat label. He's currently on tour with Major Lazer and Toddla T and you can catch him at the following dates in April:

  • 18th Manchester HMV Ritz
  • 19th London O2 Shepherds Bush Empire
  • 20th Birmingham HMV Institute
  • 22nd Glasgow O2 ABC

Kyla La Grange - Vampire Smile (selected by Kate) - Kyla La Grange is a 24-year-old singer from Watford who has been tipped for big things this year. She has been compared to the likes of Anna Calvi's goth pop and the big vocal's of Claire McGuire, and cites her own influences being artists such as Death Cab For Cutie, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell and Bright Eyes. So watch out, you'll be hearing much more of La Grange in 2012.

Sea Oleena - Milk (selected by Grim) - Just for completenesses sake - another recent video release from a 2011 track. Sea Oleena are Canadian chillgaze purveyors Charlotte Oleena plus brother Luke (aka Felix Green / Holobody) on the production and mixing side. Milk comes from the LP Sleeplessness and is a perfect antidote for .... well, most things I can think of...
