Each week, A Closer Look At... is intended to help you find out a little more about the featured artist and their concert. Or, if you're already a die-hard fan, it's a chance to remind yourself of the talent and spectacle on offer!

The tragic plane crash on the 20th of October 1977, which killed band founder/leader Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist/vocalist Steve Gaines, backing singer Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick and both pilots, happened just four years after Lynyrd Skynyrd found national success and gained a reputation as one of the best live bands in America. The plane, which eventually crash-landed in Mississippi, miraculously had four survivors, drummer Artimus Pyle, guitarist Allen Collins (1952-1990), bassist Leon Wilkeson (1952-2001) and guitarist Gary Rossington. In 1987 the surviving members reformed the band with Johnny Van Zant taking the place of his older brother Ronnie Van Zant, carrying on their prestigious reputation.

Today, Skynard consists of Johnny Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Billy Powell, Ean Evans, Rickey Medlocke, Michael Cartellone and Mark Matejka. Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into The Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Fame in 2006; an honoured achievement for the band and a celebration of their music, as well as the members they lost.

This 14-song concert from June the 23rd, 1996 at Rockpalast’s Loreley Festival (St. Goarshousen, Germany) features the band in top form. Playing to an enthusiastic audience at the open air festival, the band play a rousing set of their country-tinged, riff-fulled hits, including That Smell, Free Bird and of course, Sweet Home Alabama.
