Live In Rio sees Diana Krall performing some of her well-loved songs from her twelfth album, the Bossa Nova-themed Quiet Nights, as well as pulling out some fun Bossa Nova standards. Using Brazil as a musical point of reference, the award–winning pianist and singer delivers a stylish and intimate performance. The musicality on Live in Rio is superb. Krall’s four-piece band, Anthony Wilson on guitar, John Clayton on bass, and Jeff Hamilton on drums are beautifully in sync with one another, each member showcasing their abilities during tracks like I Love Being Here with You. Paulinho da Costa is also a fantastic musician, constantly building momentum with his legendary percussive skills.
For those who may not be familiar with the Brazilian music genre, here's a brief description:
Bossa Nova wave (literally 'new bump' or 'new way' in Portuguese) was the widely popular musical style, based on the country’s traditional samba rhythms, that swept up from the sidewalk cafes of Rio in the early ‘60s and seduced the entire planet with its hypnotic, swaying beats, sultry melodies, and new, exciting harmonies – all with generous room for jazz improvisation.
This concert is not to be missed. It's a celebration of music and culture, performed by a world-wide star.
Born in 1964, the Canadian is known for her contralto vocals and is the only Jazz singer to have eight albums debuting at the top of the Billboard Jazz Albums.
