Live Review: Coves
29th May - Power Lunches Arts Cafe, Dalston
Cafe? More like a sweatlodge! Exactly how live music ought to be enjoyed (festivals aside perhaps) - Two or three dozen bodies shoehorned into a venue the size of someone's garage, utter darkness and broiling temperatures. Absolutely wonderful - no wonder the bar ran dry.
ZZ Top To Release New EP
ZZ Top are set to release a four track EP that will be a taster of their forthcoming brand new album.
The Texicali EP will be released digitally on the 5th of June and it follows the appearance of the band's new song, I Gotsta Get Paid which features on an online advert for Jeremiah Weed.
The EP will include four tracks off their upcoming album, which is produced by Rick Rubin.
The track listing is as follows:
- I Gotsta Get Paid
- Chartreuse
- Over You
- Consumption
In recent interviews, Rick Rubin talked about the record, saying:
"Based on the visibility of the Gotsta Get Paid song, we decided to make available more of a taste of the album than just the one song. That's the beauty of the new digital landscape; we can put out what we want when we want, in the best service of the artist."
Guitarist, Billy Gibbons said:
"We were itching to get some new music out before the full album release. Making available these four tracks seems like a good way to accomplish that most expeditiously. Dusty, Frank and I are happy with what's been accomplished in the studio, so we figured we'd provide some hot and tasty 'hors d'oeuvres' before the main course is served this fall."
Watch the video for their new single, I Got To Get Paid, below. Man, ZZ Top are so cool!
New Festival Named In Honour Of John Peel
A new festival has been named in honour of the late DJ and new music champion, John Peel.
The first ever John Peel Festival of New Music is set to take place from October 11th-13th in Norwich and will be hosted by the Norwich Sound and Vision convention. The three day event will feature performances from around 50 bands at ten venues across the city.
Norwich Arts Centre director, Stuart Hobday has commented on the festival, saying:
"The festival is making a statement for new music. Nostalgia in music, particularly in live music, is all over the place with bands reforming. Each of these acts that we all liked from the past were a new band at some point trying to elbow their way in and that is what John Peel represented – getting that new music through to people."
John Peel's widow, Sheila Ravenscroft, has also expressed her pleasure at the Norwich Arts Centre keeping "the spirit and legacy of John's passion alive".
Meanwhile, John Peel's record collection is currently in the process of being released online. The names of 2,600 albums of the broadcaster's cherished record collection are being released as part of a project called 'The Space', run by The John Peel Centre in Stowmarket, which aims to recreate Peel's home studio and library online.
Peel, who died in 2004, had a collection of about 25,000 vinyl albums. Every week, the museum is expanding its virtual museum by adding the names of another 100 albums in alphabetical order. Although copyright prevents the website streaming the albums online, there will be links to listen elsewhere. There will also be detailed information about each record, taken from Peel's personal notes.

Fans Walk Out Of Guns N' Roses Manchester Show
Guns N' Roses arrived on stage so late in Manchester last night that many fans were forced to leave before they even saw the band perform.
Axl Rose and his band are famed for their late stage arrivals but pushed expectations to the extreme when they finally appeared on stage in Manchester on Tuesday night (May 29), hitting the stage at 11:15pm - a whole hour and fifteen minutes after their scheduled stage time.
When they did finally arrive on stage, they put in a mammoth three hour show resulting in fans not leaving the arena until gone 2am. It is estimated that around 40% of the audience at the Manchester MEN Arena left to catch transport home.
The band tweeted about the show, saying:
"A tip of the hat to the good folk at the M.E.N Arena Manchester To you say Manchester, United Kingdom rocks is an understatement! London calling!"
However, the fans who did stick around did not begrudge their heroes, with one fan posting on Twitter saying:

Live Review: Elvis Costello
16th May - Brighton Centre
I’ve always sat on the fence with Elvis Costello. I love some of his songs, he’s a brilliant interviewer (his Spectacle TV show is a must see with some amazing guests), he’s an amazing musician and songwriter, he’s great live…but I just can’t bring myself to admit in public that I am a fan. However at 38, it’s finally time I came out!
Roger Waters Announces Final Wall Show
Roger Waters has announced his final show, which is set to take place in Quebec, and will be the biggest one to date.
The final show of The Wall Tour will take place in Quebec City on 21st of July; Twenty two years to the day after Waters played in Berlin, shortly after the Berlin Wall came down.
Waters has revealed in a new video (watch below) that the final show on the tour will be different to all of the previous shows, he said:
"This one will be different. It’s going to be 800 feet wide, to make it the widest wall ever. When we did it in Berlin the end of the wall tapered off. Here it’s going to look like it disappears, so we get a Great Wall of China effect. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do outdoors theatrically. If you don’t come there’s something f***ing wrong with you.”
The show is set to feature more lighting, more pyrotechnics and a better surround sound system. The bigger the better! In previous interviews, Waters has revealed that he would retire after The Wall Tour finishes. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Lou Reed To Play London Show

New LP From Animals' Eric Burdon This Year
Set for release later this year on ABKCO Records is Til Your River Runs Dry; the new album from The Animals' Eric Burdon.
Eric recorded the album in New Orleans across 2010 with further work done at Playback studios in Santa Barbara, California in 2011.
Burdon commented on recording the album in a recent statement:
"I started feeling that I needed to use this album as a catharsis, to express my own truth. It took longer than any other album, not because of time spent in the studio, but because of the subject matter of the songs I wanted to put out there."
The result is a deeply intimate, honest self-portrait as well as unsparing look at religion, politics and the environment.
"During the making of this record, we lost Bo Diddley, one of my greatest influences. There were many things I would have said to him, if I'd realized that his time was limited."
Written by Eric Burdon and Terry Wilson, Til Your River Runs Dry will be available from September 18th but a single has already been released: Memorial Day.
Eric's accolades include being listed by Rolling Stone as one of the 100 'Greatest Voices of All Time'. More recently, Bruce Springsteen paid a homage to Eric at SXSW this year where Eric joined Bruce and the E Street Band on stage in Austin to perform We Gotta Get Out Of This Place.
